Almost half of million people have joined in a petition to rename a part of Fifth Avenue — the one that runs in front of the Trump Tower — in the name of Barack Obama, former US President.
The petition currently stands at almost 450,000 signatures, and many people have expressed an active interest in seeing the street renamed in this manner.
The implications of the renaming would be quite significant for Donald Trump himself, given his openly negative stance against Obama and his political ideas.
The two politicians have exchanged various not-so-pleasant words in the past, and it is clear that a rename like this would have some pretty strong implications for Trump.
Elizabeth Rowin, who is behind the petition, claims that it all started as a joke, but eventually grew into something with a lot of support from multiple sides.
She explained that she got the idea when she saw a comedian delivering a joke about how Trump would get so mad if the street was indeed renamed after former President Obama.
Rowin stated: “I honestly started it as a joke. I saw a comedian joke about how it would make Trump so mad if it was named after former President Obama and thought why not.”
The petition reads: “We request the New York City Mayor and City Council do the same by renaming a block of Fifth Avenue after the former president whose many accomplishments include: saving our nation from the Great Recession; serving two completely scandal-free terms in office; and taking out Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind September 11th, which killed over 3,000 New Yorkers,”
And now, it looks like that joke might not be that far from reality.
It is not known if the petition would actually have any effect even if it managed to get more signatures, but it is clear at this point that there is certainly a lot of interest in seeing it become a reality.
As expected, President Trump has not responded to the situation. It is also worth noting that certain laws might prohibit the naming of a street after a person who is still alive.

So despite their best hope, people behind this idea are unlikely to prevail. Trump’s opponents would be wise to focus on 2020 instead.
